According to Merriam-Webster, a secret is something that is kept from knowledge of view, working with hidden aims or methods, revealed only to the initiated, kept from the knowledge of others and shared confidentially with a select few. These are not all the definitions that Merriam-Webster provides but it can lead one to believe that there are different types of secrets and with that being the case, this may answer the question “are secrets always bad”?

There are many different types of secrets, including personal secrets, professional secrets, and family secrets. Personal secrets are things that we keep to ourselves, such as our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Professional secrets are things that we learn about our jobs that we are not supposed to share with others. Family secrets are things that are kept hidden from the public, such as a family member’s addiction or a family member’s criminal history.

The benefits of keeping secrets: There are some benefits to keeping secrets. For example, keeping secrets can help us to protect our privacy, our relationships, and our reputations. Secrets can also help us to cope with difficult emotions and experiences. With these benefits also come with risks.

Secrets can be stressful, they can damage relationships, and they can lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Secrets can also be used against us, such as if someone threatens to expose our secret if we don’t do what they want. The fear of a secret being used against us is a big reason for a person to keep a secret. However, that fear can also turn into an internal poison especially if it is a secret that can protect others and it is protecting someone that continuously hurts others.

There are some things that you can do to keep a secret, such as:
Choose someone you trust to keep your secret.
Be careful about who you tell your secret to.
Don’t write down your secret.
Don’t talk about your secret when you’re drunk or under the influence of drugs.
Don’t let your emotions get the best of you.
